A TRIBUTE TO DAVID CARRADINE
Studios on the Park / Park Cinemas, Paso Robles
Reception - 2:00-3:30pm / Tribute films at 4:00 & 7:00pm
Free admission to Studios / Wine & sweets for Mogul, Patron and Filmmaker pass holders
In tribute to last year's SLOIFF special guest (and "train robber") David Carradine, and his family, we have invited David's brother Bobby and Bobby's son, Ian, to play music in the beautiful new STUDIOS ON THE PARK (1130 Pine St. Paso Robles) just down the street from the Park Cinemas. The music and Movie Mogul, Patron and Filmmaker Pass holders will have the opportunity to also enjoy complimentary local wines and sweets in the VIP room next to the open studios where artists will be working in various media.
At 4:00pm at the Park Cinemas, enjoy a screening of the brand new film THE LEGEND OF STUART MOSSMAN, a fascinating biography of an incredibly talented guitar maker. The documentary features David, Keith and Bobby Carradine, as well as many other devotees of Mossman Guitars. This film is a must-see for any guitar player, collector and/or music lover.
At 7:00pm at the Park Cinemas, David Carradine actually plays a Mossman guitar in the Academy Award winning biography of Woody Guthrie, BOUND FOR GLORY. Woody Guthrie (David Carradine) is suffering through the Dust Bowl of Pampa, Texas in 1936. There are no jobs, no crops and not much hope. Guthrie decides that the best way for him to do his part is to become a folk singer for the poorest peoples of Northern Texas and depression-era Oklahoma. What follows is a genuinely wonderful story based upon the life (and autobiography) of one of America's greatest folk singers. Directed by Hal Ashby and brilliantly performed by David Carradine, in the role of a lifetime. Melinda Dillon, Randy Quaid and Ronny Cox co-star, but this is Carradine's show from the word go. 147 min. USA.

Enjoy a truly memorable Zin-ful night of music and movies at Vina Robles Winery, on the eve of Paso Robles Zinfandel Festival. The SLOIFF and Opera San Luis Obispo (formerly Pacific Repertory Opera) are collaborating to present A NIGHT AT THE MOULIN ROUGE. The evening begins with a wine tasting reception in the stunning Vina Robles Tasting Room. Nibble on tantalizing appetizers while enjoying several arias by local opera singers, promoting their April production of LA BOHEME. Then guests will have the opportunity to purchase glasses or bottles of wine, dine on complimentary desserts and coffee at bistro tables in the Latin Quarter Room, and enjoy one of the most awe-inspiring musical films ever made--Moulin Rouge--introduced by Opera SLO's Artistic Director, Robert Ashens, who will touch on how this film and others (RENT) were adapted from the original novel and opera, La Boheme.
Like LA BOHEME, MOULIN ROUGE is set in Paris in late 1890's. Christian, a young English poet, comes to Paris to pursue a penniless career as a writer. However, he soon meets a group of Bohemians who tell him that he should write a musical show for them to be performed at the Moulin Rouge, the most famous underworld nightclub in Paris. The night they arrive at the Moulin Rouge, Christian meets Satine, the club's star and a beautiful courtesan. He falls head-over-heels in love with her and though it takes a bit of convincing, she falls for him as well. Meanwhile, the club's owner, Harold Zidler, invests in a wealthy Duke to help pay for the club, but the Duke will only pay if Satine is his. This crazy love triangle twists and turns. And little does Satine know that she has a deadly secret that could end everything. Directed by Australian Baz Luhrmann, and winner of two Oscars, the film features stunning sets and costumes and cinematography, and amazing performances by Ewan McGregor, Nicole Kidman, Jim Broadbent. An unforgettable cinematic classic that needs to be seen on a big screen! USA/Australia. 2001. Musical drama. |
