Ampelos Cellars Description
Ampelos has been a family endeavor from the start….initially “corporate folks”, Peter & Rebecca loved getting away to the Sta. Rita Hills on weekends and dreamt of one day planting our own vineyard and making wines. A cancelled meeting in New York on the morning of September 11, 2001 helped us to realize that someday was today!
Peter and Rebecca share a commitment to the environment which is reflected in their vineyard and winery practices as well as in their personal lives. At Ampelos Cellars, we are firm believers in the old adage that the “wine is made in the vineyard” and therefore we are one of the first vineyards in the US to be certified organic, biodynamics and sustainable in practice.
Our estate vineyard has been planted with those varietals that will showcase the location, soils and climate at our site and we are thrilled that those best suited to ampelos vineyard are those grapes which are our favorites!
The varietals we have planted are Pinot Noir, Syrah, Grenache and a little bit of Viognier, based on extensive clone diversity to provide us our “spice cabinet”.
In addition to wines from our estate grapes, we continue to produce wines from fruit from some of our favorite vineyards - FiddleStix for Pinot Noir, Alisos for Syrah and Grenache, Cuatro Vientos in Santa Ynez Valley for Viognier and our Rosé of Syrah, Evergreen for Viognier and Vigna Cesaria for the Viognier.
Tasting Room is open Saturdays and by appointment.

Great pinot and dornfelder Rhaas, Los Angeles These guys make some world-class pinot and a unique red called dornfelder. Peter and Rebecca were very accomodating, and gave us an extensive barrel tasting late on a Sunday afternoon. The tasting "room" is really just a table in the warehouse where they barrel the wine, which is just fine by me. Like many of the wineries in the area, the tasting is done in Lompoc, not at the vineyards.

Overall Impressions
Excellent wines prost99, Colorado Springs Ampelos is my #1 recommendation for wineries to try. I loved every one of their wines, and the winemakers were the ones pouring. They were very friendly and enjoyed sharing the process of wine-making.
