Andrew Murray Vineyards Description

“Handcrafted wines from steep hillside vineyards planted exclusively to Rhône Varieties” is the motto of this local winery. Six-foot-tall photographs of the vineyard greet the visitor at the small storefront tasting room on the main drag of the quaint town of Los Olivos. Inside is modern décor featuring the only stainless steel tasting bar in town. Against a wall, a computer screen scrolls through pictures of the winemaking process. Olive oil and other gourmet items are for sale, and a couple of tables are placed in front, making ideal relaxation and people-watching spots.

The winery is tucked away in Foxen Canyon, making wine from the traditional Rhone varietals of Grenache, Viognier, Syrah, Mourvedre, Roussanne and Marsanne. From these grapes they make 100% varietal wines, along with many Rhone blends. On their estate vineyard there are 30 distinct blocks of vines that are all fermented separately and later blended by the winemaker. In addition to their estate vineyard grapes, other wines are produced from grapes sourced from Paso Robles, Los Alamos, upper Santa Ynez Valley, Cat Canyon and Ballard Canyon.

Tasting some of the best

Some very nice wines can be found here in this very hip tasting room on the main drag in Los Olivos. The Syrah was our favorite with some nice spice and rich earthyness. The other favorite was the floral Viognier.

Andrew Murray is conveniently located in Los Olivos and offers their wine under 5 distinct "families of wine." They are: Tous Les Jour (“everyday” and easy-drinking Syrah. It is produced and carefully blended to be soft and smooth and full of ripe berry aromas and flavors); The Blends (their red blend “Esperance”, which is a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre and the white blend, “Enchante” for the coming together of Roussanne and Marsanne in the same bottle); their Varietal Wines - Syrah and Voignier; The Single Vineyard; and their Oak Savanna Wines. I was pretty impressed with The 2003 Esperance. It is a blend of 40% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 30% Mourvedre (specifically). It has a delicious ripe fruit flavor and slight spiciness.
