Beringer Vineyards Description

Beringer Winery is the oldest continuously operating winery in the Napa Valley. In 2001, the estate was placed on the National Register for Historic Places as a Historic District. This is one of the most popular destination wineries in the valley, with many tours, tasting and shopping opportunities.

The extensive winery grounds have elaborate gardens, two wine-tasting rooms, wine caves, a well-stocked gift shop, and stately 19th-century architecture that evokes the Victorian heyday of the Beringer brothers. Completed in 1884 by architect Albert Schroepfer, Frederick Beringer's 17-room residence has beautiful exterior stonework, stained-glass windows and interior wood paneling - all exhibiting exceptional artistry and craftsmanship.

The winery grounds are extensive and include gardens, walkways, and
ivy-covered stone buildings. Take a tour and check out the tunnels that were hand-chiseled into the hillside of Spring Mountain between the late 1870s and the early 1880s.

There are five different tours available, ranging in duration from 30 to 90 minutes; they cover many aspects of the winery’s history, architecture and winemaking philosophies. Because there is so much here to see and do, the place can become quite crowded, so it is best to plan on early arrival and call ahead for reservations.

The tour was well done and interesting- the history of the house, the cellars, and winemaking in California are all told well. It's in a pretty spot "Up Valley" north of St. Helena, and close to nice spots for hiking and picnicking (like the Grist Mill State Park). My favorite wine was the Cabernet Franc.
