Bouchaine Vineyards Description
Down one of the narrow lanes that make up much of the Carneros region is a little gem of a place that has been known for winemaking since 1929. Once owned by Beringer Brothers, the facility was sold in 1981 to Gerret and Tatiana Copeland. As one of the oldest wineries in the region, Bouchaine went through a major renovation in 1995 and now sports a beautiful, rustic, wood-sided winery building that has garnered numerous awards from historic and architectural organizations.
The 85-acre estate vineyard is farmed using sustainable practices and has received the Napa Valley Green Certification, an endorsement that they are in accordance with the preservation of natural resources. The shallow, clay-loam soil, along with the cool fog that rolls in each night, creates ideal conditions for their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The winemaking team is lead by Michael Richmond, the founder of nearby Acacia Winery and a well-known member of the Pinot Noir producing community. His philosophy is to have “a grounding in traditional winemaking, while at the same time honoring the new styles that are emerging in the industry….it is walking the line between wines that are dramatically expressive but reserved and appropriate with meals.”
The tasting room is set across from the large winery building and looks south over the Carneros Vineyards. The oak tasting bar and comfortable surroundings make for a pleasant and refreshing stop.
