Caparone Winery Description
Down the almost deserted county drive of San Marcos Road you drive up a gravel road to the home of one of the most unpretentious wineries in the state. A wine pioneer, Caparone was first in California to grow and market the Italian varietals Sangiovese and Aglianico. You first see a group of old brown metal outbuildings thinking the winery must be further up the lane. But then you notice the small little sign for the winery above a non-descript metal door. Next to this lonely little door is a sign that says OPEN. This is the place!
Caparone is run by a father and son and has no non-family employees. They specialize in the production of interesting, high quality, red wines sold at a fair price. Their wines are rich and complex with all their wines fermented on the skins for at least 30 days to extract as much flavor and complexity as possible. Every wine they produce is also unfined, unfiltered and spends a minimum of 2 years in oak barrels. Some of their Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Nebbiolo, and Merlot wines can age and improve for decades
The tasting room is inside their dark cool barrel room with a couple of barrels and planks of wood serving as their tasting bar. If you ask you can usually get a chance to taste right out of the barrels. No imported tile, no gift shop, no pony rides-- “simple winery, complex wines”, is their motto.

CaparoneRhaas, Los Angeles I appreciate what they are doing, making wines that age at an excellent price. The wines however, are just not to my taste. There is a nose that the wines all have in common that doesn't appeal to me. I did enjoy the 04 cabernet, however. The facility is spartan, which is fine by me, but there were a few too many flies in February. Marc is an excellent host. I will give them a try again sometime in the future. I would encourage everyone to check it out; the operation is unique to any winery I have ever visited.

A memberBaccus1, Thousand Oaks If you are looking for a big gate, gift shop and a spot to lounge, this is not the place. If you are looking for top notch wine that compares with none, at an exceptional value, this is it! $14 a bottle, but worth well beyond. Unfined and unfiltered wines, all reds. Best value!!!!!!!

Something Differentvcgeno, Scottsdale No matter how nice all of our wine tasting trips fall in to a routine where there is a certain sameness to the experience. Not so hear. Out in the middle of nowhere you drive up to not so pretty building open a small door and walk into a fairly stark warehouse/tasting room. Not an ounce of pretentiousness here which is refreshing. And then you tast the wine and you realize all that other stuff does not matter. They produce some unique Italian varietals not found other places and the there lack of over processing gives their wines a unique flavor that we enjoyed more. We did a double take when they told us all the wines were only ($12 of $14 we don't remember) which makes this an incredible value. Well worth the trip but make sure you visit other places before stopping here because the difference is part of the experience.

Barrel room tasting barEagle12, Schaumburg Our last stop on a five day tasting trip, Marc was on hand to pour the wines. At $12 a bottle across the board and organic estate grown wines this should be listed as a super value. Marc is very knowledgeable and answered all our questions. I joined the wine club and purchased the Sangiovese and the Nebbiolo. This is a no frills place and you are basically in the barrel room tasting the wines, my wife and I enjoyed this.
