Cerro Caliente Cellars Description
It’s not every day that you find a boutique winery making hand-crafted wines in a working automotive repair garage. But winemakers and winery owners have come from many disparate industries and occupations that wouldn’t at first glance seem to be the right fit, and have produced good and even great wines.
With that thought in mind, a visit to Cerro Caliente (Hot Hill) Cellars is a rare opportunity to taste a Bordeaux blend named “Multi-Viscosity Red” or the “Garage Sale Syrah.” One-of-a-kind artwork labels featuring specific cars that the owner has restored adorn special limited-release wines.
Family owned and operated Boutique winery located in San Luis Obispo, California. When you first pull up it looks like a well-kept warehouse, until you take your first step inside. Suddenly, you are taken into a whole new world. Surrounded by Venetian plastered walls, cobblestone floors, the artwork of Gene Francis, a faux second story complete with windows and planters. A long tasting bar in an open space, with a beautiful set up & gift shop.
The winery/garage is located in an industrial park on the east side of San Luis Obispo, squeezed in among nondescript low-slung buildings housing small businesses owned by various local entrepreneurs. The winery is open limited hours, but otherwise welcomes visitors to their clean mustard-colored tasting room with roll-up doors and other automotive flourishes. As the owner describes it, “This is the place where Cabernets and Cadillacs are at home, Merlots and Mercurys mix, Chardonnays and Chevrolets play, and hydraulic presses and wine presses work side by side.”
Cerro Caliente’s wines are from grapes sourced in the local area and include Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Zinfandel, Cab Franc, Sangiovese and their Multi-Viscosity non-vintage Bordeaux blends.

Favorite SLO wineryjmsisco6@yahoo.com, San Luis Obispo This is one of my boyfriend and my favorite wineries that we happened to stumble across on a bike ride. The friendliness of the staff cannot be matched and their events are awesome. The wine maker has a true knowledge not only for how to make great wine - but also how to pair food with it. The value and flavors of the wines are always spot on and we LOVE the passion for wine and cars combined.

Want something different?Moorewine, Buellton Okay, I see the person from Napa didn't like wine in a garage. But for the rest of you who believe that wine can be loved without the snobbery attached, this is the winery for you. They offer 25 fabulous wines/vintages at resonable prices. Casual and convenient, Cerro Caliente should be your fist stop when visiting San Luis Obispo. It's a small family run winery without the influence of big corporate Brand X. Don't let the building fool you. Once inside, you'll love the wine!

Love this winerybchase47@yahoo.com, San Diego I have to say that Cerro Caliente is one of my top two wineries. I love the unpretentious atmosphere, it is really special to meet and be served by the family of the wine crafter. When you are tasting at this establishment, you know you are welcome. I have found some of the wines to be a little sweet but some of them are so exceptional and different from what you will find anywhere else. Cerro Caliente is not trying to live up to some French or Napa ideal of what a Cab or Zin should be. The wines are works of art and while I or you may not think that every wine is your cup of tea, isn't that what art is all about? Experimenting with the limits, maybe pushing them too far here or there? You don't have to be into classic cars to love this winery, but if you are into really sweet people, finding an exceptional wine at a very reasonable price, and testing the limits of what a exceptional wine should be, then you should visit this winery. Maybe I do have a huge crush on the crafters daughter but I loved the artistry of this winery before I met her. Cool cars, great wine and really special people, what more could anyone ask for?

Cars and WineWine Guy, Palm Springs The Garage Sale Syrah was fitting considering the automotive garage and also tasty too. I brought my two kids and they thought the auto aspect was neat. I personally love to restore old cars, so this was a good match for me.

What? A garage?Napan7, Napa It's a garage. Sure they put a tasting room in it, but it's a garage. I'm big on ambiance and this place just didn't cut it for me. Perhaps if I were more interested automobiles then it would've proved more exciting for me.
The wines are average. Nothing worth buying a case of. I'd say, if you want an interesting story to tell back home, taste at this place so you can say you've tasted wine everywhere...even a garage.
I won't be back.
