Chalone Vineyard Description
Ten miles east of Gonzales toward Pinnacles National Monument, along an often narrow and winding road, lies the reward of Chalone Vineyard. Home to one of the early pioneers in California viticulture, this remote vineyard is perched high in the Gavilan Mountain Range. The rich limestone soils, along with limited rainfall and low-yielding vine management, produce wines with distinctive aromas and bouquets. The specialty here is Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Syrah.
At Stonewall Canyon Road, turn left and meander among the hillside vineyards until you come to the grounds and outbuildings of the winery. Entering the winery property, notice the old gnarled-head trained vines. Set into a small tree-studded valley, visitors feel like they might be in the middle of a rustic retreat center, rather than a winery. There is a large grassy lawn with a few picnic tables that are shaded by oak trees. The tasting room and winery is on the side of the hill up a flight of stairs. An old grape press and a swath of red roses mark the entry.

Worth the driveHenry, Phoenix Its quite a beautiful drive up through the hills with views of the Pinnacles. The reward is the park like setting of Chalone along with their never ordinary wines. Pinot Blanc is usually hard to find and here it is the perfect blend of fruit, oak, and subtle lingering flavors. We like all their wines.
