Clautiere Vineyard Description

The folks at Clautiere Vineyard are dedicated to creating a magical wine tasting experience for their customers, and it all begins with their colorful tasting room off Union Road in east Paso Robles.

A tasting room that pleases both your inner-child and your palate. Boasting black-and-white checkered floors, peri- winkle colored walls and a “play room” equipped with zany hats and multicolored wigs, the interior space is a true Alice in Wonderland experience. Fall down the rabbit hole and hold onto your glass!

The creative forces behind Clautiere Vineyard are Claudine Blackwell and Terry Brady. Between them they boast a number of diverse positions in their lifetime, such as fashion designer, welder, landscape designer, restaurant owner and as of late, winemaker. Since moving to Paso Robles in July 1999, the couple has, over time, given new life to the ranch.

The boutique winery produces about 3,000 cases of quality, estate-grown wine per year, including viognier, cabernet sauvignon, syrah and blends. The 57-acre vine- yard boasts 13 varietals in total.

Converting the farm house into a vibrant, colorful & energetic tasting room, gift shop and commercial kitchen. The barn has been turned into a theatre with a built in stage and sound system used by bands and entertainers to perform on during parties. The property is decorated with a 230 foot entry fence, metal sculptures and ceramics that were all designed and crafted by Claudine.

You enter off a back-country road and first see a giant six and half foot ceramic sphere parked in front of a redwood cottage set under giant Oak trees. Look for the many artistic creations throughout the property. The artwork is by the owner and presently not for sale.

The tasting room leads into a small art gallery where more of the owners unique creations reside. The overall effect is outrageous and the mood is all fun. The artistic bent here should not keep you from their wine-- It is all serious. The winery produces red Rhone-style blends as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Viognier, Grenache and a port.

More than anything, the winery is a place to let go and simply enjoy life, wine and the wonderment of every day.

I was a bit skeptical as to the quality of the wine at first with crazy mosaic spheres of all sizes hanging from all the oak trees and the funky zen rock gardens. Then the tasting room looking like something from a scene from Alice and wonderland but WOW was I surprised. The wines were all exceptional, european in style. Less sweet jammy sugar and more real ripe fruit and good acidity to all the wines. The dude behind the bar opened a 2003 Rhone blend that was at it's peak after 7 yrs. in the bottle. He said they make wines designed to age and compliment food and not drowned your palate. Funky, crazy place with KILLER Euro style wines!!

An interesting winery

I went during the harvest festival this year. The staff was friendly and helpful. The wines were all drinkable, a few being good or better. I particularly liked their Rose and their Mon De Rouge. Did not like their Viogner, seemed very flat.
