Clautiere Vineyard Description

An artistic cross of “Edward Scissorhands meets the Mad Hatter at the Moulin Rouge”--this winery and tasting room are truly one-of a kind.

You enter off a back-country road and first see a giant six and half foot ceramic sphere parked in front of a redwood cottage set under giant Oak trees. There is two hundred and thirty feet of metal sculpted fencing that surrounds the property where you might also spy other artistic creations. The artwork is by the owner and presently not for sale.

Once you enter the tasting room you are greeted by a black and white tiled floor, periwinkle and lavender colored walls, contrasting geometric designs and a box full of wildly-colored wigs. (Check out their photo albums for potential blackmail opportunities.)

The narrow tasting room leads into a small art gallery where more of the owners unique creations reside. The overall effect is outrageous and the mood is all fun. The artistic bent here should not keep you from their wine-- It is all serious. The winery produces red Rhone-style blends as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Viognier, Grenache and a port. The wine is produced from their estate vineyards and made in small lots.

I was a bit skeptical as to the quality of the wine at first with crazy mosaic spheres of all sizes hanging from all the oak trees and the funky zen rock gardens. Then the tasting room looking like something from a scene from Alice and wonderland but WOW was I surprised. The wines were all exceptional, european in style. Less sweet jammy sugar and more real ripe fruit and good acidity to all the wines. The dude behind the bar opened a 2003 Rhone blend that was at it's peak after 7 yrs. in the bottle. He said they make wines designed to age and compliment food and not drowned your palate. Funky, crazy place with KILLER Euro style wines!!

An interesting winery

I went during the harvest festival this year. The staff was friendly and helpful. The wines were all drinkable, a few being good or better. I particularly liked their Rose and their Mon De Rouge. Did not like their Viogner, seemed very flat.
