Clos du Val Description

In 1972 an American business man dispatched a French born winemaker to find land suitable to grow high quality grapes with the potential to make world class wines. It was here in the Stag’s Leap district that owner John Goelet along with winemaker Bernard Portet found what they were looking for.

The district is known for its ripe fruit, creating wines with an elegant balance, and velvety and silky tannins. Their first vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon in 1972 was one of only five California Cabernets selected for the now-legendary 1976 Paris Tasting, when California wines beat out their French counterparts in blind tastings.

The Clos Du Val estate has mature Cypress and olive trees, gardens and secluded grassy areas, including petanque courts, the French version of bocce ball, leading up to the wood-sided winery building. You may also check out the demonstration vineyard that shows various trellis systems.

The tasting room has extra tall ceilings along with 12 foot glass doors that look into the fermentation room. A long ‘L’ shaped tasting counter has a vineyard view out its windows. There are a few clothing items and a few local vineyard maps for sale.

The wines made from their vineyards include Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Merlot. Picnic sites available in their olive grove.

discovered Clos Du Val in the early 70's while in college waiting tables and have been drinking their reds ever since. very scenic grounds and nice tasting room/picnic area. a fairly big winery that has the advantage of having great wine that is available in local stores.

My husband and I were referred by another winery to make a stop here. We are so glad we did. The wines were full bodied, just the way we like them and the staff was fun! We had a great time. Bought several bottles of wine and have bought more since we have been home.

Very nice stop on our tour. The grounds are very beautiful. The staff was good, but very young and learning. Have to say that we were there during the slow season and the tasting room was not busy. So we had a more one on one with staff. The wine is very good, I really enjoyed the Merlot.

Pleasant place, the pourer was a bit brusk and hurried but very good wine. Aquainted myself with a few others, they were from Germany and France and all had a good opinion of the Winery. Very good reds, the Merlot was smooth and hint of dark berry.

The Pinot Noir was great. We took our picnic basket and enjoyed the picnic area very much. Overall, a unique and elegant experience.
