Cold Heaven Description
Part of the Clendenen clan of Santa Barbara County winemakers, the owners of Cold Heaven Winery have focused on Rhone varietals with a particular focus on Viognier. The grapes are sourced from local Santa Barbara County vineyards, and the wines are made at their nearby family-owned winery, Au Bon Climat.
Their small tasting room sports a Western theme, with cowhide rugs and stools around the small rustic wine bar. A tin awning shades the entryway, and inside is an antique wine press and windows looking out to the street. Cold Heaven shares the same building with Bedford Thompson’s tasting room.
The wines produced include small lots of Viognier, Syrah, Pinot Noir, and a micro bottling of a specialty blend combining 50% Viognier from a local vineyard with Viognier from the Condrieu region of France.

Western-rificTheAmericanIdol, Santa Barbara This is an all around great winery. It has a very rustic western feel due to its decor. I went to this winery after I read an article in the LA Times raving about it. As the article pointed out, the Voignier wines offered do tend to be lean, perfumed, attenuated wines, always with a marked acid component that provides definition and vibrancy. In response, wine maker and owner Morgan Clendenen achieves this by meticulous fruit selection, and by harvesting well before anyone else does. Although the price of wine per bottle varies, some of the better bottles hover in the 50-65 dollar range. I would recommend this, as I usually do, to anyone in the SoCal area.
