The Derby family has been growing grapes for years and in 2008 has started their own label producing an array of quality products including their tasty MoCab (Mouvedre & Cabernet Sauvignon).
The vineyard was established in 1977 on what was once part of the original Estrella River Winery Vineyards. In the past 30 years the property has changed hands a number of times and is now in the capable ownership of Ray and Pam Derby.
The winery owns three distinct vineyards, ranging from the warm growing areas east of Paso Robles, all the way to the coast with grapes growing just one mile inland from the cool Pacific Ocean. The large vineyard holdings provide grapes to a number of local wineries and to their own brand. The winery produces small lots of Pinot Grigio,
Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a white Rhone blend.
Plans are in progress to build a state-of-the-art winery, tasting room and an events center, but for now the wineries tasting room is a modest affair just off Highway 46 under a group of shade trees. From the highway you see a long cedar pergola out in front of the tasting room’s. There is a covered porch with a few tables and chairs. Inside there is a long tasting bar surrounded by gourmet food items, logo clothing, pottery, chocolate sweets and a flat screen monitor with images of the vineyards.
