Eberle Winery Description

Just off Highway 46 is a small hill and the redwood winery building built by local wine pioneer, Gary Eberle. A fixture in the Paso Robles wine community for over 30 years Mr. Eberle has earned an enviable reputation for making suburb red wines--especially his prized Cabernet Sauvignon.

His leadership in the local industry helped create the formal Paso Robles Appellation. His wines include a number of Cabernet choices, plus Zinfandel, Barbera, Syrah, Sangiovese, Roussanne, plus Chardonnay, Viognier, and a sweet Muscat Canelli. He sources grapes from the local area to compliment his own estate vineyard.

As you take the drive up the small hill to the winery, you pass by one of the entrances to the wine caves. As you enter the tasting room don’t forget to rub the nose and drop a coin in the bronze boar fountain on the way in. (Eberle translates to small boar in German). Past the stained glass French door entry is the cozy tasting room with a fireplace and a set of windows that look down on the production facility.

Wine accessories and gourmet items are displayed throughout the comfy space. The long wine tasting bar opens out to the large covered BBQ deck with dramatic vineyard views. On weekends a reasonably priced gourmet picnic lunch is available (reserve 48 hours ahead of time). Often the owner is present meeting guests or presiding over the BBQ. For the full Eberle experience try the VIP tour and tasting down in a private underground room in the caves ($20 per person). This is a treat that is well worth it.

Big, but worth it!

A must-stop! Even though their wines are bigger production they are wonderfully made. Their Barbera is a treat and equal to other area versions that are twice the price! The Syrahs are wonderful everyday wines, and the Roussanne is my favorite white. Wait. I didn't say that. They're nearly out if it. Avoid the Roussanne so I can buy more. Their Cab/Syrah blend is amazing too! The staff is wonderful, very knowledgeable, and I would highly recommend the cave tour with tasting if you have the time and can schedule it. You can sign up through their web site, and the experience of tasting all of their wines in the caves with cheeses after a tour of the winery was incredible. There is only one downside to the whole place. The winery dogs are standard poodles. Enough said.

This was the coziest and most intimate vineyard I had been to in a long while. I loved the environment and I am at heart a lover of red wines over white and this is the place to be if this is your taste. I tried most of the selection but fell for the prized Cabernet Sauvignon. I also spent time checking out the wine caves-- it was really a treat.
