Foxen Vineyard Description
Foxen Vineyards has been a landmark on the Foxen Canyon wine trail for years. With the opening of a second location now you can have twice the Foxen experience. Their newly completed tasting room has all the amenities and comfort of a well heeled winery- spacious, well appointed, nice patio, good wines and happy people. Foxen pours their Bordeaux wine along with their Sangiovese. To taste the Burgundy and Rhone wines you need to amble down the road 1/2 mile.
The original tasting room, known as the shack, is Located right on the side of the road, this one-of-a-kind tasting experience is housed on a 2,000-acre ranch in a tin-roofed converted blacksmith’s shop. The winery building sits back a few yards from the road and was once the area’s official stagecoach stop. Queenie and Yahee are the official canine greeters of this rustic oasis.
The open-air tasting “room” leads outside onto a long narrow deck with benches and tables looking over the Sisquoc riverbed. The property was originally part of a 9,000-acre Mexican land grant, and was purchased in 1837 by Sea Captain William Foxen. Originally named Rancho Tinaquaic, the ranch is still in family hands and home to cattle ranching and winemaking by the patriarch’s
great-great-grandson.
Captain Foxen adopted the anchor design as his ranch cattle brand, and this is also the winery’s trademark. Foxen Winery makes small-production vineyard-designated wines using a “minimalist” approach. Across the street is a portion of their vineyard holdings, which are currently growing Chardonnay. The winery sources grapes from other Santa Ynez Valley vineyards and produces Chenin Blanc, Sangiovese Volpino, Syrah, Pinot Noir, late harvest Viognier and Bordeaux, Tuscan and Rhone blends.

Best southern California wineryUtopian, Redwood City This is a winery with a split personality. Taste at the shack for an old school look at one of the founding families of the Santa Maria Valley wine industry was like. If you are reasonably friendly they will pour you off the tasting list. Happy valley cabs are the only drinkable cabs in southern California. Their Pinots are exceptional (block 8 or Julia's vinyard). The best wines are usually at the shack.
The new 7200 tasting room is what you've grown to expect from California wineries. This winery had a two year waiting list to become a member, and it was with the wait.
Make sure you Have a designated driver especially if you visit both locations because the wines are high alcohol and the pours are generous.

New and Old Tasting RoomsEagle12, Chicago We visited both tasting rooms, the old shack and the sleek new tasting room. I will start with the new tasting room and winery. This is what most people would like I guess, clean comfortable, new, large, no road noise or dust. It is a very nice place with the wines as good as always. Then you head up the road to the shack and its the Foxen you remember. Hummingbirds out back, trucks rolling by with dust, pictures stapled to the walls, I'll take a bottle or two. The staff at both tasting rooms are friendly and knowledgeable. The wines are very good, we purchase multiple bottles but the best red I tried for the money was the 06 Happy Canyon Range 30 West Merlot/Cab blend. Bill Wathen stops in to say hi to everyone, were snacking on cheese and crackers, our visit to Foxen is complete, we will be back.

Funky & CoolJames, Sacremento Right alongside the road is this little shack of a tasting room yet it is very comfortable and also surprising how great the wine is from this place. There is a small vineyard across the street and they get fruit from other places as well. There is something special about tasting such good wine in a place that is not trying to be a Italian Villa or a French Chateaux. We love this place and many of the wineries around it for that reason.

Foxen VineyardWine Lover, Oceano This is a very nice historical ranch. I was greeted by a couple of very friendly dogs. I enjoyed the Chardonnay so much I took advantage of the 20% discount on three cases.
