Frank Family Vineyards Description
Located in the historic Larkmead Winery, Frank Family Vineyards produces handcrafted wines in small quantities from grapes grown in the Carneros and Rutherford districts of Napa Valley. The winery produces Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Sangiovese and several distinctly different Cabernet Sauvignons.
The winery was originally built in 1884 and refinished with native sandstone from the nearby hills in 1906. The massive stone edifice is considered an archetype of California’s wine country; it appears on the National Register of Historic Places, and is listed as a Point of Historic Interest by the State of California. Once owned by wine legend Hans Kornell, the winery originally secured its reputation with sparkling wines.
Five sparkling wines are handcrafted today in the old building: Brut, Blanc de Blancs, Blanc de Noirs, and occasionally Rouge and Reserve. All of these are made in the traditional French méthode champenoise style.
New Tasting Room
The winery has a new tasting room designed by renowned local architects Terry Tracy and Tom Faherty of Valley Architects, with interior design by Sara Marsten Bittner of Marsten Interior Design, the famously friendly tasting room retains its warm, convivial charm while expanding and enhancing the tasting facilities, which includes two additional rooms for private tastings.
“Our goal was to give new life to this historic property while maintaining the rustic charm and rich heritage of this landmark winery,” says Rich Frank. “We sought to infuse more of the architectural aspects in the newly remodeled structures through the use of enduring materials like native stone and rustic wood,” adds Connie Frank. By repeating design elements such as color, finishes, architectural details and spatial relationships, Frank Family sought to create a balanced and integrated overall design that will give visitors a cohesive, harmonious experience.
The tasting room was fashioned from the original winery owners’ former residence, a classic Craftsman bungalow brimming with character. The original brick fireplace was lovingly restored after being found beneath layers of plaster and paint. The use of rich, warm wood and historic paint colors, taken from the era when the original home was constructed create a cozy retreat that invites guests to linger and savor the charm of a bygone era.

Very funchappkg, Broomfield This was a very fun place to visit. Small, but intimate tasting room. You walk in the front door and immediately start tasting the sparkling offerings. Their Signature Brut was outstanding. Once finished there proceed to the back and taste the rest. Very personable staff made this very fun. Their Zin is great.

Colorful BottlesTara, Savoy Frank Family
Frank Family Vineyards is definitely an interesting place to go. The tasting room is somewhat small, but that makes for an intimate setting. The staff seems to have worked there a long time, and knows the wines well. The wonderful sparkling wines are tasted in the back room. We tasted three sparkling wines: a 100% Napa Chardonnay, a 100% white Pinot Noir, and a 100% red Pinot Noir; so there should be one for each person’s taste. In the front room, we tasted Napa Chardonnay, Napa Zinfandel, and Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. They have reserve wines available for purchase. Since we liked the Cab. Sauv. so much, we ended up buying both the lower-priced and higher-priced Cabernet Sauvignons, as well as the Zinfandel. The bottles are a lovely colorful heat-transfer-labeled glass, which looks like they could become collector’s items. Word of warning, there are no bargain wines here, so if you are not interested in paying $30, or more, for a wine, you’d better skip this place.
