Grey Wolf Cellars Description

On top off a small hill sits the red roofed,60 year old farm house of Grey Wolf Cellars. This family operation has old fashioned hospitality, hand made estate grown wines presented in a friendly, relaxed environment.

You stroll by rose bushes and a couple of Italian Cypress trees on your way up the walk. (Notice the wolf prints in the stepping stones.) An outdoor deck and patio sits out under oak trees overlooking the vineyards below. Inside the homey tasting room is a rock fronted fireplace, wood floors and ceilings, plates mounted on the walls, framed B&W pictures of the former owners of the property, antiques, a piano, and a friendly cat. On the fireplace mantle is a Springfield rifle from post civil war times. Next to the tasting bar is a full kitchen used for employee snacks and for wine dinners on the deck.

The wolf connection came from the owner’s interest in the often misunderstood animal. Locally there is a wolf rescue facility nearby and during winery events they will often host a “come hug a wolf day’ where the tamed creatures are invited to the event. The vineyard is planted to Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Cabernet Franc and smaller lots of Petite Verdot, Malbec, Petite Sirah, and the Rhone varieties, Cinsault and Grenache. Additional grapes are sourced from local growers.

The wines are crushed, barreled and bottled on the premises. Small open-topped fermentors are used along with old world winemaking methods to produce notable, hand crafted Bordeaux and Rhone style wines.

Nice People, so-so wines

We've stopped here a couple of times and were even wine club members for a time. The tasting room is beautiful and the staff is very friendly. It is worth a visit is you haven't been there before. The wines are OK, nothing special. Their "soulmate" is the best of the bunch and the "Lone Wolf" is a decent table wine. Unfortunately their wines don't stand up to other local wineries when tasting side by side.

Fell in love with the 2005 Zin. The aftertaste goes on forever - great wine!
