Description

Handley Cellars has a wonderful location on the eastern side of the Anderson Valley and boasts a tasting room full of folk art from around the world. They make their wines from their own certified organic vineyards, producing a rich selection of still and sparkling wines.

Handley Cellars’ wine-tasting experience includes an eclectic mix of folk art, lovely gardens, a great patio and a range of Mendocino wines. The low-slung building sits on the side of a hill with views facing west. An old British bar shares the space with “elephant chairs” from Africa, a 22-foot-long ceremonial dugout canoe from Papua New Guinea, and numerous sculptures and antiquities from around the world.

The winery owner has been collecting folk art for years, and has galleries in Menlo Park and San Francisco. In Anderson Valley, he specializes in the liquid art of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer made from their organically grown grapes.

To round out their tasting list the winery also produces a Dry Creek Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc from Anderson Valley, Riesling from nearby Cole Ranch, a Redwood Valley Zinfandel, a Pinot Noir Rose and two sparkling wines.

Adjacent to the tasting room area is a wonderful covered patio lushly planted and adorned with numerous sculptures. Food- and wine-pairing programs are offered monthly at no charge. Please call ahead for dates of these events.

Wonderful Patio & Wines

This is a very neat spot with lots of wild stuff in their tasting room. A big long dug-out canoe is attached to one of the walls. There is all kinds of interesting and odd things displayed but it all seems to look nice and not feel like a swap meet. We actually tasted and went out to their patio and took in the late afternoon with a bottle of their Pinot Noir. The wines were very good and there was lots to taste and choose from. Besides the Pinot the Cabernet was outstanding.
