Hecker Pass Winery Description
Wine barrel planters along the roadway lead you into the old winery at Hecker Pass. The facility goes back 30-plus years making Italian-style wines, including sweet dessert wines. Mario, a third-generation winemaker, came to California and established the winery in 1959 after learning the art of winemaking in Cosenza, Italy. Mario chose the southern Santa Clara Valley for its weather patterns of hot summer days and cool nights. All the Hecker Pass wines are made from estate-grown grapes.
The wood-framed winery and fermenting room were built in 1972. Their grapes are handpicked and naturally fermented in wood tanks, then pressed in an
old-style wooden basket press. Wines made include a California Chianti, Petite Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Carignane, and Grenache. On the dessert side are a Muscat wine, Ruby Port, Marsala and a Cream Sherry.
Inside the tasting room is a unique tasting bar hand-made from redwood and pecky cedar. There is a display of over 120 awards on the walls, along with a large map of Italy. Just outside the tasting room there is a lovely arbor-covered picnic area where guests of the winery are welcome to enjoy their picnic lunch. Wines are for sale at the winery only.

Hecker Pass Winerymccronep, Salinas The tasting room has a rustic, old country feel to it. A very welcoing place to sample the wine. The staff were very friendly, helpful; the lady that helped me was a new hire, so I think she was still getting to know the place, but she otherwise did a great job.
My favorite wine was the Zinfandel, along with the Ruby Zinfandel. Excellent, a hint of Blackberry. Loved it! I tried 7 wines - Hecker pass does not charge for wine tasting, a big plus! I truly liked all the wines. THe zinfandells stood out, but the others were quite good also. I strongly recommend stopping at this tasting room. I liked this winery even better than Solis, which is just down the road on Rte 152 from Hecker Pass. Solis charges $10 for 5 wines to taste. If you are a white wine lover, though, best not to go to Hecker pass; they only have one white - called 'Blanc de Blanc'. I enjoyed it, rather like a Sauvignon Blanc, But this is all they make for whites. No chardonnays.

Perfect PortOrion, Santa Barbara The aged beauty surrounding the Hecker Pass winery is unforgettable, from the elegant drive into the vineyard to the hand crafted redwood and cedar tasting room. The traditional aspects of this particular Vineyard are what give it its unique blend of Italian history and elegant selection. I was taken by the Ports, I am a lover of Ruby Port and must sample a bottle from each vineyard I venture to. At Hecker Pass I found their Ruby Port, which is indeed a gold medal, to be superior to any other Port I have tasted in the past.
