Hess Collection Winery Description
Four miles up Redwood Road on rugged Mount Veeder is a special place with first class art, Napa Valley history and a range of worthy wines. Once the home of Christian Brothers Winery the Hess Collection sits tucked up against the hillside, offering excellent tour and tasting programs.
Enter a garden walkway through redwood trees and flowers, coming to a large courtyard garden punctuated with dramatic bronze sculptures by Dutch, Danish, German and American artists. Follow the path to the corner entrance of the tasting room and be greeted by your Hess Collection host.
Inside the stylish three-story entry hall, with its striking glass elevator, you are directed to the old barrel room - now the tasting room - deep within the building. The old winery walls are constructed from metamorphic sandstone called Rhyolite and provide a very appealing ambiance. Three different “series” of wines are made: California, Vineyard Designate and the exclusive Mt. Veeder Series. Cabernet, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc.
The art on display is a small part of the owner’s major collection. Contemporary artists from America, Europe, Africa, and Asia, including artists Frank Stella, Alan Rath, Morris Lewis and Robert Motherwell are professionally displayed in a large dramatic gallery. Vivid and powerful works of bronze sculptures, interactive media, mixed media and photography are on exhibit on two floors and should not be missed.
Free production tours or art tours are given on the half-hour on the weekends, and self-guided art tours are available daily. There is also a Food & Wine Pairing program on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 10am and 2pm.
