J Wine Company Description

A classy place to taste the bubbly, sample super-gourmet treats, take a tour, or join a class, J specializes in sparkling wine (dare we say “Champagne?”) and has a dazzling showroom for visitors.

Judy Jordan is the Founder and CEO of J Vineyards and Winery. Judy founded
J in 1986 as a méthode Champenoise winery specializing in one product:
J Vintage Brut.

Cross the footbridge over the moat-like lily pond to the modern concrete-and-glass winery and tasting room. Check out the gardens, drink in the view, and be ready for plenty of tiny bubbles.

Wine notes, ratings & prices

The dramatic tasting room is a stunning work of art in itself. A 20-foot-tall glass-art sculpture by Gordon Huethel sets the tone of style, grace and class. The glass-topped, crescent-shaped tasting counter is usually abuzz with wine tasters sampling J’s epicurean treats. Although the tasting fee is steep, the experience is well worth it.

J makes a range of sparkling wines using traditional methods from the cool vineyards of the Russian River Valley. The winery farms nine vineyards, primarily planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay; these grapes are the long-established varieties used in the Champagne region of France. They make a limited amount of still wines from these grapes, as well as Pinot Gris, Viognier, Zinfandel and some dessert wines. Try their Pear Liqueur, or the newly released Ratafia.

Special VIP tasting programs are available, including food and wine presentations in their “Bubble Room.” Or check out their elegant Garden Pavilion, where the concierge will show you to your table and serve you J’s wines matched with an epicurean presentation of artisan cheeses, pâtés and cured meats.

Great Sparkling, Pinot Noir,Dessert Wines

At J Winery you have the option of doing a reserve tasting or a regular tasting, both are deliciously paired with freshly prepared appetizers. A single tasting includes 2 of each appetizer, as sharing one tasting is common. The tasting room is often very crowded on weekends, but the tasting is worth it. The normal tasting starts with their sparkling wine and usually ends with a Pinot Noir. The reserve room is a separate room with comfortable couches to lounge on. You have a choice of flights, both involving Pinot Noir. J Winery’s winemaker/owner is the daughter of the Jordans, of the famous Sonoma winery - Jordan Winery. I am a big fan of wineries that do food and wine pairings. J obviously employs a talented culinary staff, because the appetizers are excellent. The wine is very good as well. The thing I can’t understand is with talent in the kitchen and talent in the tasting room, why can’t they make the pairings work? The last 4 times I was there, the food did nothing to improve the wine, and in several cases the wine was better without the food. Be sure to always taste the wine first, then the food, then the wine again, in any food and wine tasting.
