Jaffurs Wine Cellars Description
Just a couple blocks from the main downtown shopping area is this unpretentious little gem of a place focusing their efforts of fine Rhone varietals. The South Swell Syrah fits the image as the wines are produced within earshot of the beach.
The small operation can be spotted by the wine barrels scattered around in their parking lot and the napping winery dog at his pillowed sentry station. Venture into the winery building and you will find jacketed stainless steel tanks, some folding tables with wine and T-shirts, a small wine lab in the corner, and surfboards on the walls. The owner winemaker is usually present and pouring, talking about and sampling his many wines.
It’s all about Rhone wine here and specifically the notable Syrah. Seven different versions are made from this grape from a number of county vineyards. Very small amounts of each wine are produced-- each displaying their unique terroir. Let the winemaker guide you through tasting his wines made from the same grape and the same vintage but from different local vineyards. The subtleties become apparent and your tasting experienced will be memorable.
Grenache, Petite Sirah, Roussanne, Sangiovese and Viognier complete the food friendly and fruit forward wines that are made here.

Best in townEvaree, Los Angeles This winery has the best quality wine in Santa Barbara (in town). The staff are very friendly. The tasting room is in a garage, it gives a fun ambiance. It does not feel like a "stiff" tasting room like some of the other places. You feel more relaxed drinking wine here, like you are in a friend's garage. The red wine is amazing here. Signing up for their club would be worthwhile.

Best in TownDigitalEye, Santa Barbara Jaffurs is hands down the best wine coming out of Santa Barbara county today and while their "industrial" downtown winery isn't a showplace by any means it is the birthplace of some fantastically good Rhone varietals. Primarily known for their Syrahs, Jaffurs does a fine job with Grenache, Mourvedre and even a special edition Sangiovese. Essentially there is nothing that the Jaffurs crew doesn't do well (Ok the latest rose' was uninspiring) but these guys really have it down. The crew Craig, Dave and Matt are all really great guys who are happy to talk to anyone at any level about how they do their thing (basically its all about passion and hard work). If you come to Santa Barbara and don't stop at Jaffurs you've blown it. PS if there was a 5+ for wine quality they'd get it!!

The Jaffurs "Family" ExperienceTheAmericanIdol, Santa Barbara I stopped in awhile ago and had the opportunity to meet several of the Jaffurs "family members." Craig and Lee (husband/wife co-own this winery) are extremely friendly. Matt, is a young/hip guy who conducts informal tours and seems to be part of the Jaffurs family, though he really isn't. On my trip I ended up purchasing a bottle of the 2005 Santa Barbara County Syrah. It had a nice, complex mix of flavors including ripe berries, hint of sage and lavender as well. This fine wine is good to drink until 2012. I'd recommend adding this to your SoCal winery experience.
