Justin Winery Description

Deep in the back woods of west Paso Robles, Deborah and Justin Baldwin have created a first class winery along with a superlative wine tasting experience. They had the vision of creating world class Bordeaux style blends and single varietals combining “old world tradition with new world techniques.” The result has been breathtaking with Justin wines growing to a successful international brand.

The vineyard property incorporates a total of 160 acres, of which 72 are mostly dry farmed acres planted to full-bodied Bordeaux grape varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and a very small amount of Orange Muscat. The steep hillside vineyards yield little water and all the grapes must be hand harvested. Additional fruit is sourced from local Paso Robles growers. The flagship Isosceles wine (the blends are named after various types of triangles) is a mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and is made using extended barrel aging, frequent gravity racking, non-filtration techniques and a year of bottle aging. In total Justin makes over ten wines including a sweet Muscat and a Cabernet Port.

The wine experience starts before you enter the tasting room. As you walk up the gravel path look for the demonstration vineyard off to the left. Ten rows of grape vines each have small placards that tell you the grape variety, clone, root stock and trellis systems present. Under mature elm and oak trees is a picnic area, tasting room, event patio and the lovely intimate restaurant open by reservation for dinner most nights and for lunch on the weekends.

Once inside and through the lobby with its cozy fireplace, you enter the richly decorated European style room with an Italian marble floor, Venetian plastered walls and wood paneled ceilings. The copper topped tasting bars look out over grassy lawns, trees and patios. The room is well stocked with elegant wine accessories, a large selection of over a dozen gourmet cheeses and meats, crackers, and dipping oils. Large format bottles are also for sale.

There are three tours available at Justin, a winery tour and vineyard tour for $10 each and the VIP Sensory Evaluation and Barrel Tasting Tour. All tour fees include your tasting. The JustInn B&B is tucked back in the vineyards and provides five star treatment in their large luxurious suites.

Fantastic winery! My favorite in Paso Robles. The tasting room staff is friendly and knowledgeable and so helpful. The dogs greated me on my most recent visit and lunch on the patio at Deborah's Room was fabulous. This winery is one not to miss! Highly recommend!

Justin has VERY nice wines but the tasting room is usually understaffed and crowded which at times can yield to somewhat rude tasting room attendants. I have stood in the tasting room, un-noticed and un-greeted for 10 minutes in past visits. If you are hungry, there is almost no better experience than having lunch on the patio at Deborah's Room Restaurant, fantastic.

A bit TOO hip

We used to be wine club members...but we couldn't take the snooty attitude any longer. The Isoceles is a treat, and worth getting for special dinners, but don't bother with the winery. Every time we went to do a tasting we were treated as if we should feel honored that we could even taste their wines. I had made arrangements for a tour, only to be told upon arrival that the person who was to give the tour was "too busy" and no-one else was available either. When we made our way to the tasting room it was almost 10 minutes before anyone even said hello, and there was only one other couple in the room. We canceled our membership when we got home and won't return. They don't seem to want anyone's business anyway.

This is a must stop tasting room experience. The drive out is gorgeous and the destination is spectacular. Very tasteful (!) tasting room with two tasting bars and lots of neat stuff. Of course the Cabs are fantastic and deserve all the attention. You will not be disappointed here.
