The Australian Aboriginal word “Kalyra” means “a wild and pleasant place”. That is just the ambiance owner and winemaker Mike Browne wished to present when he established Kalyra Winery in 1989. Brown studied viniculture at UC Davis and after, worked at vineyards in Australia. He came back to Santa Barbara to found his own winery and bring his experience of international wines to California. The vineyard was originally planted in 1968, located in the Santa Ynez valley. Brown blends the best of Santa Barbara varietals from his winery along with varietals from Australia, Portugal, France and Spain, making for delicious worldly wines.
The winery has a unique vibe to it and caught the attention of movie producers in 2003. They filmed the comedy-drama “Sideways” at Kalyra Winery, and after the winery has been a popular attraction to wine-lovers and moviegoers alike.
Kalyra has opened its second tasting room in downtown Santa Barbara, Kalyra By the Sea. Mike and Martin Brown are pleased to offer wines from Santa Barbara County and beyond in a cool, funky environment just two blocks from the beach. This tasting room transports visitors to paradise in a tiki room setting and features all of Kalyra Winery's fabulous wines to sample. Whether you are visiting in Santa Ynez Valley wine country or chic Santa Barbara, Kalyra has two tasting room options that are sure to be the most talked about destination of your trip.
