Description
Taking the Watsonville Road turnoff from Hecker Pass Road, you come to a small verdant valley with rolling oak-covered hillsides and the occasional vineyard. The Spaniards found wild grapes growing here and named this valley "Uvas," meaning grapes.
Kirigin Cellars sits up on a small hill overlooking the hills and vineyards. The winery has been a fixture here for years and recently changed hands. The new owner originates from New Delhi, India, and comes to Gilroy via Stanford Law School, stating that he was attracted by the picturesque setting of the vineyards and the high quality of its wines. He is dedicated to continuing the winemaking traditions of Mr. Kirigin while enhancing both the beauty of this unique property and the quality of the wine. He has certainly added to the place, with full-sized Cricket and soccer fields having already been established behind the winery operation
As you head up Kirigin’s drive, you pass a small complex of houses. Circle around back and look for the very plain “Tasting Room” sign that signals you are in the right place. The ivy-covered entrance hides a cave-like room with painted concrete walls and floor. The mood is fun, exciting, and a bit funky. There is an old-world charm to the place that is surprising and delightful.
The wines made include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Malvasia Bianca, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, some red and white blends, sparkling wines, and a red wine vinegar.
