Laird Family Estate Description

Laird Family Estate: Laird Family Estate is an 8,000 case winery located just off highway 29 near the town of Napa. Although ground was broken for the winery only in 1998, Ken Laird and his family had been growing grapes on the property for nearly 35 years. They are best known for their Red Hen Chardonnay and Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon.

With the help of Robert Mondavi, who consulted Ken on proper vineyard management, the Laird transformed a former prune orchard into one of the premier Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in the valley. Still a family affair, Laird Estate now attracts visitors to its I.M. Pei designed tasting room.

The tasting list focuses on primarily Chardonnay for the whites, as well as some key single vineyard Cabernets from Diamond Mountain, Rutherford, and Yountville. In addition to its tasting room, Laird also houses an innovative custom crush facility, where local vintners have access to storage and winemaking equipment. Consulting Winemaker Paul Hobbs adds his expertise and has crafted wines not of overwhelmingly fruit immensity, but of elegance and polish, reflective of their origins.

Terrific wine. I joined the wine club. Excellent all around. Cannot find these wines on east coast, so it looks like some of my shipments will become gifts

Striking winery

Laird Family is a striking winery, located just off of Highway 29. You're welcomed to the winery by a long driveway up to the tasting room, which is elevated above the surrounding vineyards. The day I went was kind of rainy, but it looked like they had a nice patio for picnics and tasting. The tasting room was casual and relaxed and there were some gift items for sale. I went early in the morning on a weekday, so I had the whole place to myself. They also have an enormous custom crush facility behind the winery, which seemed like a good idea for all those little vintners who want access to winemaking equipment.
