Description
As you drive south on Highway 12 just north of Kenwood you can’t miss the dramatic “castle” with its turrets, slate roofs, balconies and fountains. The 16,000-square-foot French Normandy structure was designed entirely by owner Steve Ledson and features sweeping staircases, marble fireplaces, cathedral-style windows, coffered ceilings, several tasting bars, luxuriously appointed bridal suites and over five miles of ornate wood inlays and mosaics.
In addition to the 15-acre estate Merlot vines that surround the house, and their 21 acres of old-vine Zinfandel grapes in Sonoma, the family has extensive land holdings in Mendocino County, where they grow Chardonnay, Syrah and Pinot Noir grapes.
The “castle” is the only place where Ledson wines are available, other than through their wine club and on the Internet. A total of 75 wines are offered, with 25 available for tasting on most days. There are three tiers of tastings, as well as a $25 VIP program.
The winery specializes in Zinfandel, making over a dozen styles. Their handcrafted varietal wines can be enjoyed in one of several beautifully appointed tasting rooms or outside in their tranquil, grassy picnic areas. Don’t miss the opportunity to browse their Gourmet Marketplace for your specialty food items, gifts, wine accessories, full range of box lunches, deli sandwiches and artisan cheeses. A full kitchen also provides gourmet dinners (call ahead for reservations.)
