Lions Peak Vineyards Description

Lions Peak produces an array of traditional Bordeaux, Rhone, and Italian varietal wines and blends. Their vineyard and winery is in northern San Luis Obispo County near the small Mission town of San Miguel. The vineyard was originally planted in 1971 at an elevation of 1,200 feet. The style of winemaking is to create full-bodied, balanced low-tannin wines. The winery also produces excellent Zinfandel, Port and Late-Harvest Dessert wines.

One hundred miles south of their winery is their lovely tasting room in the European-style resort town of Solvang. Mixed among the quaint shops and restaurants is the thatched-roof tasting room, gift shop and art gallery of Lions Peak. The bright, colorful shop is packed with elegant gift items including pottery, wine accessories, ethnic wood carvings, artisan painted glassware, brightly colored artwork and other handicrafts.

The long wine bar has a dozen stools and offers their current wine releases and a selection of their older “Library Wines” for tasting. The staff is engaging and knowledgeable about their wines. The sit down tasting is comfortable and the wines are an excellent value. See Recent Newsletter or the Lions Roar Blog.

The Lions Peak Vineyard is one of the oldest vineyards in the Central Coast, and set in the very heart of the historic San Miguel region. The estate is just a few

miles from the Mission San Miguel Archangel which was founded in the 16th century by Franciscan Padres. The Vineyards hillside terrain rises 1200 feet above sea level, and the outstanding soils and ideal climate have come together to create a history of the production of exceptional wines.

Overall Impressions
Hometown delight!
TheAmericanIdol, Santa Barbara
Located in the town I grew up in, Solvang, this tasting room exterior is adorable in the typical Danish white/brown trim style. The inside is quaint but comfortable. I tried a variety of their wines and I picked my two favorites. My first would be the 2000 Lionnesse which is a Red Bordeaux Blend. It is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc which can only be described as complex and elegant. It has a vivid red color, perfect balance, smooth tannins, and aromatic complexity as well. I also liked a white wine called "Three Sisters." It was a delicate and complex full-bodied white wine that is composed of Marsanne, Rousanne, Viognier, and Muscat. The aroma is full of fruit, mostly peach and even coconut. The aroma also has a slightly vanilla essence! I would recommend either of those wines personally. The staff was friendly which is always a plus! I'll visit again!
