Prager Winery & Port Works Description

Look for the small sign for Prager Port Works and Bed & Breakfast on the side of the highway across the street from Louis Martini Winery. Turn quickly and carefully onto the dirt track that leads you back behind the Sutter Home Victorian to a gravel parking lot and micro-vineyard. There you will find a 25-year-old cedar barn that is home to the small rustic inn and the miniscule one-of-a-kind tasting room of Prager Winery.

Enter around the back past the outdoor stairway and come into a cramped, cluttered room adorned with hundreds (maybe thousands) of personally signed one-dollar bills attached to the walls, ceilings and railings of this most-funky stop along Highway 12. This tradition started in the mid-1980s when Prager’s owner put up the first bill and visitors later followed his lead. There is currency from all over the world, and even a few checks. The space is quite informal, including the lab, tasting desk, office, a chair and their historic “web site.”

Since1979, Prager has been specializing in the production of wines as well as various styles of California port, which include Vintage, Late-Bottle Vintage, Tawny and even a couple of White Ports. Table wines consist of Cabernet Sauvignon, a dessert Riesling and Chardonnay. The grapes are mostly sourced from growers in the Valley, using ripe Petite Sirah and Cabernet along with the Portuguese varieties of Touriga Nacional, Tinto Cao, Tinta Roriz, and the white grape Verdelho. The fortified results are impressive and worth a taste. There is a hand-etched bottle collection on display, as well as a selection of cigars for sale.

Love Port
dawnahuff, pleasant hill
If you love ports you will love Prager. They are a funky little place that is not your normal Napa stop. you go into a barn type building and you taste in a room that has dollar bills all over the walls, dollars from all over the world are there. My husband and I shared a tasting and we tried 2 wines, both wonderful and we tried 4 ports. we left with a bottle of port and a bottle of Chocolate Port sauce made just for Prager (yum). If you want to try great ports in a funky little place I highly recommend Prager Ports.

This was an old school B and B/winery. Really enjoyed their port wines. You get to hang in this funky little room with all kinds of stuff hanging around. Not your typical Napa destination!
