Provenance Vineyards Description

The word provenance means “origin” or “source.” In the art world, a provenance is the record of a work's ownership, from its creation to the present day. Connoisseurs place great importance on provenance as a guarantee of authenticity. The name reflects Provenance Vineyards' goal of creating fine wines that are works of art.

This big, bright crimson-colored winery building can’t be missed along the west side of the highway. Its expansive grassy lawn and surrounding vineyards provide some space and distance from the bustle of the roadway. Inside, the richly wooded tasting room is comfortable and spacious; the design is reminiscent of an art gallery more than a tasting room. The unique wood floor is made from the staves of the winery’s used oak barrels. (If you look closely you can see the old coopers’ marks). The lighting is modern, and there is a large round window that looks through to the barrel room.

The horseshoe-shaped tasting bar serves its visitors well, providing three different tasting options. Each option adds one or two additional wines to sample, including their flagship Cabernet Sauvignon from their Hewitt Vineyard in Rutherford. Their winemaking philosophy is to intervene as little as possible as the grapes become wine, “striving to bring out the personality, complexity and uniqueness of each vineyard and vintage.” Wines made include Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and a Ruby Cabernet Port. Provenance is part of the Diageo family of wineries.

Great wines and very friendly staff
zinlover30, Walnut Creek
Nicely appointed tasting room and very friendly and knowledgeable staff that shared the winery history. Even officially owned by Diageo they have retained their mid-size winery hospitality. All the wines tasted were of great quality - really not a bad one in the bunch! If you are a club member, you can go into the barrel room where the member "hideout" is - very fun!
