Salisbury Vineyards Description

Looking west from US 101 near Avila Beach, is the historic 1907 Avila Valley Schoolhouse and now home to Salisbury Vineyards. After five years of restoration the schoolhouse makes for a great place to enjoy the wines of the Salisbury family or catch one of their entertaining events.

See John Salisury's "Ask the Farmer" article.

The Tasting room is dominated by a large rectangular wooden tasting bar where visitors can sample Chardonnay, Merlot, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and a number of specialty Pinot Noir wines, including Pinot Naturale™ and Rosea di Pinot Noir™. Wines are made at local wine making facilities from Central Coast grapes including their nearby 51 acre Avila Vineyard. You can taste and roam through the adjacent art gallery where high end works of art are displayed. The place has a relaxed but elegant ambiance.

This is a family affair where daughter and son-in-law run the tasting room operation and provide insights to their nearby Avila Vineyards. A protected patio with tables and chairs is available for picnicking and relaxing. There are frequent concerts and events taking place year round in their patio. Call for details. For nearby accommodations see San Luis Obispo hotels.

Devil Dog Red half bottles!
Winequest, Monterey
While visiting the Central Coast last weekend, we stopped in at one of our favorites, Salisbury Vineyards. They have some great new wines, the 2006 Reserve Pinot Noir is incredible. But, in addition, adding to the fun is that they have bottled their famous Devil Dog Red in half bottles now, perfect for me to take to dinner, when my wife chooses to be DD!

Great Movie Night!
WineHound, San Luis Obispo
The most recent Pick Up party for the Salisbury wine club - Club Avila, included an outdoor movie, barbeque and even an intermission with pie and ice cream! The Salisbury wines were a great compliment all night long and the generous extra 5% for club members during the month of September is a real bonus. The movie nights are now open to the public after the inaugural club night with partial benefit to the SLO film festival group. Definitely check it out and join Club Avila while you are there!.

Experience Counts
WineHound, San Luis Obispo
John Salisbury is a sixth generation California farmer and you know what they say about the wine being made in the vineyard and the winemaker's job is not to mess it up. John took his farming knowledge and applied it to grapes and wine making in the 90's. The Reserve Syrah is an incredible representation of what can be done with this varietal. The tasting room is a fun place and they have some great music and club events if you are looking for a good value all around.

The Merlot was fabulous and would go nice with dark chocolate for an after dinner treat. The mix of an old school house and classy artwork gave the place great style. A nice jazz band was playing on the patio.

Can't really knock the place, but I'm not a great fan. My favorite wine would have to be the Pinot Naturale -- I took a couple bottles home with me just because it's pretty unique and I'm sure I will be able to come up with a really interesting food pairing for it. The art gallery is nice if you get bored tasting, I guess... Also they said they have frequent events that would be fun if I'm ever in SLO-town when they're having one, I'd probably pop in.
