Description

A bit of the bubbly will surely tickle your fancy at Scharffenberger Winery. Owned by the great Champagne house Roederer Estates, this small, friendly operation is located in the bucolic Anderson Valley just outside of the town of Philo.

Scharffenberger is a great little spot, with their farmhouse tasting room and comfortable picnic areas. They have an attentive tasting room staff serving up sparkling wine for visitors. Their méthode champenoise sparkling wine is made from the traditional grapes of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The bright and airy tasting room has unique handcrafted pottery for sale and a few wine-related gift items. A rotating artist series adorns the walls with local artwork and photography. The winery has juice, crayons, and a small table for kids to keep them occupied while their parents taste.

The original owner sold the winery some years back and has had similar success making Scharffen Berger Chocolate.

Great bubbly
SBStacey, Santa Barbara
October, 2007

The tasting room here reminds me of my grandma's living room. Walking inside, on a foggy late October day, I was instantly warmed by the ambiance. The tasting counter is simple, with room for about 10 on a good day, and some very nice ladies pouring very good and very reasonable sparkling wines (though they do have some still Pinot and Chardonnay as well). The tasting fee can't be beat! Everyone inside the little room seemed to be happy and relaxed and I felt like I discovered a little gem in the middle of this oftentimes isolated valley.
