Scott Cellars Description

Scott Cellars can definitely be called a one-man show. In 1995 on a wing and a prayer, Peter Scott Fraser left the advertising business to pursue his desire to have his own winery. First came a job selling wines while studying viticulture and oenology at night. Then in 2000 Peter took over as winemaker at a small winery in Ventura. After honing his winemaking skills for five years, Peter started, "his own winery" in 2005. At only 1000 cases, Scott Cellars is one of the smallest wineries around. Since all fruit is sourced, the greatest care is taken when choosing vineyards.

Peter Fraser is not only the head winemaker, he is also the sole tasting room host in his small storefront property. He obviously enjoys his new job, and is delighted to talk to his guests about anything wine related. His wines range from Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Syrah, Pinot Noir, and a blend of Zinfandel/Syrah called Cuvee J (which he pairs with chocolate bars of different cocoa percentages and guides you to the perfect match). Asked if he offers any "wine seminars", he laughs and says "Yea, you get to come in and talk to me. That's better than any seminar you could get."

Peter makes the best wines I have had. His Pinot is rich, smooth, and full of nuance and character. Simply the best pinot in California, & maybe the world. His cuvee is intricate and robust. The whites are equally amazing. The tasting room is a little hidden but worth the search.

I have been here several times. Actually, my only wine club membership belongs to Scott Cellars. The owner is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what he does. The tastings are fun, because they do comparisons and pairings and such...but all this pales in comparison to the brilliant wine they pour. I have never been to a place where I enjoyed EVERY wine. The Pinot was masterful..ripe and delicious, and don't get me started on the Cuvee J. I brought friends and family in last time, and they came away with the same impression. If you are a wine lover, you are doing yourself a disfavor if you don't stop in here.

Scott Cellars is a great place to taste wine. I stopped in here as part of a Santa Ynez Valley Jeep Tour adventure, and ended up staying for over an hour. The head winemaker, Peter, is so enthusiastic about wine, that it's infectious. We enjoyed all his bottlings, especially the Cuvee J (Zin/Syrah) blend, matched perfectly with dark chocolate. You could tell that he loved his job and that he had found his niche. His wines must be hard to get, since he only produces about 1,000 cases, so I'd recommend stopping in and picking some bottles up for yourself.
