Sextant Description

Out in the little berg of Edna is the tasting room home of Sextant Wines, where a wide range of Rhone-style reds and whites, as well as richly textured Zinfandels and Chardonnays, can be sampled and enjoyed. Three brands are offered here: Windemere, Sextant and 10 Knots.

The historic building makes for a great place to sample their wines. The adventurous nautical theme is the vision of the owners to show their appreciation of the ocean and the adventure of life. The wines are produced 30 miles north in the wine town of Templeton, which is situated closer to many of the company’s extensive vineyards.

The family-owned operation has been farming for years and operates the RBZ nursery. All plants grown here are the first of their kind in the United States, and are imported from France through the French ENTAV-INRA program. Incredibly, all the vines trace back to one original “mother plant” in France.

Sextant has recently added to its holdings by purchasing a Chardonnay vineyard in Edna Valley, with plans to add a winery soon.

Decent Wine, Ok Tasting Room
DigitalEye, Santa Barbara
Sextant recently opened up a new tasting room out in the Edna Valley. Its nice place in a century old building that looks like it used to be a general store. The staff when we visited were both somewhat knowledgeable college students that could give us the basic info but not too many details on each of the wines we tasted. I did really like the Chard, needs a bit more acid but is really up my alley which is the classic rich and buttery chard. Reds are just decent at the lower end and quite nice at the higher end. Unfortunately prices here seem to be a bit out of step, you usually have to pay more for the better wines but I'm not sure their best is worth what they charge. If they knocked $10-$15 off their top bottlings they'd probably get a bit more exposure for their better wines.

Nice Wine!
Wino, Palo Alto
When in SLO town this is a good convenient stop for some nice wine. The tasting room is elegant and there are a lot of choices to taste from. The reds were our favorite.

Zins the Zinniest
James, Santa Monica
Really liked this place. It has a lot of wines to go through and good people. Location is not in a vineyard but it was very convenient. The Zins were the best. My girlfriend though liked the Chard. We bought some of both!

Loved those Rhone Beauties
Rocko,
Had a fine time tasting some very exceptional Rhone blends at this small tasting room in San Luis Obispo. It is right on a main street so easy to find and no parking problems. The place is all decked out and the hostess was knowledgeable AND friendly. There are a lot of wines to taste here in addition to the Rhone's. We did not try them all but judging by what we did taste I would bet they are very decent.

Tasty stop in SLO!
Margo, San Francisco
This little place was not too hard to find from the Winery Advisor map and we are glad we found it. Kind of a hip little wine bar type place pouring a bunch of wines from their three labels. Plenty of rich and soft Rhone wines, and a great local Chardonnay. Check it out.

Set sail with Sextant and 10knots
Kevin, Templeton
The entire line of wine is amazing. Because of the assortment of varieties and all made so well, there is a wine for everyone. The staff were all extremely knowledgeable and the enthusiasm is evident. A very enjoyable experience for our entire group. For part of our group that didn't want to taste there was a lounge area and the staff even brought out kid toys for our young one. The only drawback is that you are not surrounded by vineyards, but who wants the dust on their car anyway. I thought the location was actually extremely convenient and plenty of parking. The Deckhand Club is a must...looks like a lot of fun and awesome wines to look forward to.

good blends

We liked their various red blends. The place is cute and comfy. We lounged a bit on their furniture and enjoyed ourselves. The nautical theme was not over the top. It was done right.

Fun
Holly,
I did not expect the style of this tasting space from the outside to impress me at all, being that it was in the corner of a strip mall, but I was pleasantly surprised. The theme was magnificent, and I realized that I had never been to such a highly themed tasting space before. Although I love the ocean and so I enjoyed my time there, if you want open spaces and to venture into the vineyard that the wine is produced in then this is not the place for you to venture to. But if you find yourself in San Luis Obispo then I would recommend this little space to you.
