Silvestri Vineyards Description
Alan Silvestri’s career as a music composer in film has blazed an innovative trail with his exciting and melodic scores, winning the applause of Hollywood and movie audiences the world over.
During this 30 year career, Alan & his wife Sandra’s dream of a winery in Carmel Valley was realized with their first release in 2003. Producing Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah and now Pinot Blanc with a soon to be released Barbera. Silvestri Vineyards is located approximately 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean up Carmel Valley.
This location of the vineyard is the key element in the terroir of this unique site. During the growing season the cool marine influence on one side and the much warmer inland mountains on the other side subject this spot to daily afternoon winds bringing dramatic temperature drops even on the sunniest days. The vineyards are on benchlands and hillsides several hundred feet above the valley floor further exposing them to the marine onshore flow.
The very rocky soils are based on a soft shale locally referred to as “chalk rock”. All varieties are a mix of three to five different clones to take advantage of the earlier ripening characteristics and to provide a palette of flavors from which to create elegant and complex wines.
Maximum yield for all varieties is approximately 3 tons per acre. The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir typically are harvested in late September or early October and the Syrah in late October. Bud break is usually three to four weeks behind the nearby Salinas Valley appellations reflecting the influence of the nearby mountains.
The wines show that lovingly cultivated fruit has a music all its own. “There’s something about the elemental side of winemaking that appeals to me,” he says. "Both music making and wine making involve the blending of art and science. Just as each note brings it own voice to the melody, each vine brings it's own unique personality to the wine. "
