Sobon Estate Description
Sobon Estate makes rich and spicy Viognier and Roussanne white wines, as well as red wines Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Grenache, and Carignane. However, it is their big, bold Zinfandel wines that get a lot of attention. Vineyards such as Cougar Hill, Fiddletown and Rocky Top provide the grapes for these fruit-forward, massive wines.
The tasting room is housed in a simple stucco building within the winery complex across from the picnic area. The spacious room is adorned with decades of wine ribbons as well as gift items, picnic supplies and wine accessories. The original winery building has been transformed into the Shenandoah Valley Museum, which has on display ancient winemaking equipment, grinding wheels, plows and related items. Admission is free, and it is worth a visit.
The family farms 125 acres of walnuts and grapes without herbicides, pesticides, or chemical fertilizers, and in 2002 received their CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers) Certification. They also own and operate the nearby Shenandoah Vineyards, which makes Italian varietals.

| Overall Impressions |

Organically GrownJavier, Portland I found myself at the Sobon Estate under the impression that I was merely going to have a fine time tasting the wines and enjoying the gorgeous surroundings of the Sierra Foothills, which I did. Although I was surprised by the exhibit of historic material regarding the cultivation of wines. While the property was not elegant, the raw nature of the surrounding land was most impressive. I was truly impressed by the effort it takes for the growth and production of organic wines.
