Description
In a small grove of redwood trees just off the highway is an odd barn-like structure that is home to the Standish micro-winery. Burgundian-style Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are produced, along with a few bottles of Gewürztraminer, at a very out-of-the-ordinary site.
The curious wood-shingled winery is actually a historic apple dryer dating back to the 1880s. The three-story redwood structure has been restored and makes for an interesting and unique tasting room. Some of the original equipment is still on site, including the fruit-drying racks and their pulley-door systems. Even though the fruit-drying operation closed in the 1920s, on a warm day the sweet essence of apples still lingers in the air.
Prior to becoming a winery, the historic building was a quaint restaurant. The tasting room occupies the top floor, along with a small kitchen that - with advance notice - can provide food to accompany your tasting. A knowledgeable staff will walk you through their tasting menu and outline the various nuances of their wines.
The winery was founded by brothers Ken and Miles Oswald, longtime grape growers and former winery principals in Anderson Valley. Along with managing directors Valerie Oswald and Lori Kraemer, they produce Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, selling directly to consumers.
