Tobin James Cellars Description

Once an old stagecoach stop, this rustic wine tasting stop offer a one-of-a-kind experience that will surely please your palate as well as the “cowboy” in you.

As you stroll up to the ramshackle two-story structure, you are greeted by an assortment of old western pots and pans, blacksmith equipment, a decrepit wagon wheel, fruit presses, barbed wire, a long wooden church pew, wooden chairs and ancient horse tack.

Once inside, you feel like you’re in a saloon from the days of Jessie James (who once hid out at his uncle's nearby Ponza Ranch). The long, 140-year old Brunswick mahogany bar with brass foot rail serves as the main tasting center with a smaller, though similar hand chiseled back-up bar nearby. A third horseshoe shaped counter, off to the side, handles the overflow from this often raucous tasting room.

There are tables with pottery, displays of cowboy hats, Tommy Bahama Hawaiian shirts, gourmet foods, and glassware, along with large format bottles, for sale. The kids will enjoy the full-size video game consoles or there is always Cisco the dog to keep them company.

Known for an array of red wines, including ten different Zinfandels, they produce 35 other varietals including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Syrah Rose, Sangiovese, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, some Bordeaux blends, and wines from Tempranillo and Primitivo grapes. They also have a late harvest sweet Merlot and a Sparkling wine. A three room guest house is available on the premises for wine club members. For picnicking, there are a few tables out in front under the palm trees.

Tobin James Cellars is my FAV!!
Paso Wine Lover, Paso Robles
December, 2007

So... One of the reasons I moved to Paso Robles... I love to go wine tasting whenever I can! My favorite, by far, is Tobin James Cellars. I belong to their wine club and it is the best value, like half off their reserves. What really got me was their tasting room. I walked in and immediately felt at home. They were very friendly and the owners even poured for me, a rarity. The wines were spectacular, very approachable with a good balance of fruit and finish. My favorite is their reserve Syrah, wild berry flavors with an oaky and earthy finish. This is a definite must stop place! Watch out for Saturday's though, it can be hard to make your way to the bar with all the people.

Western ambiance made me feel like an authentic cow girl. My favorite wine was definitely the Syrah Rose. Fun way to travel back in time.

Nice to see where I buy from

Bought their wines for years, they aren't on my favorites list but consistently good for dinner, etc. They make a lot of wine and have a pretty cowaboy-ish feel to the place but since it's a larger producer it takes a lot of the experience out of it for me. I prefer the smaller mom n pop places but this one is still a unique visit.
