Trefethen Vineyards Description
Grand iron gates on rock pillars greet visitors to this pastoral setting just off Highway 12 in the heart of the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. Three generations of Trefethens have produced wine here for over 35 years, concentrating on Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, and dry and late harvest Riesling.
GrapeRadio interview with John Trefethen
The long paved drive is lined with over 150 Sycamore trees, bisecting an extensive vineyard property. In the back of the winery compound is the tasting room and gardens with redwood trees, a cork tree, lavender, and lushly planted vegetation. Past the gardens, is a fountain, and courtyard and entrance to the rustic and historic tasting room.
The winery building was constructed as the Eshcol Winery in 1886. Built entirely out of wood, it is the last remaining example of a nineteenth century three-story gravity-fed winery in Napa County. The heavy interior beams and red brick floors make for a very attractive and cozy space for wine tasting. There is also a nice collection of wine books and some gift items for sale. The adjacent “wine library” is an elegant space with rich leather chairs, couches, oriental rugs and an ornate tasting counter.
All the wines are made from the Trefethen’s estate vineyard with a classic California fruit-forward style. Recently, they also have added a Viognier to their offerings.
