Twomey Cellars Description

Twomey Winery makes three wines, but focuses most of their efforts on making the quintessential Napa Valley Merlot. (Twomey is the sister winery of nearby Silver Oaks Winery.)

The grapes are sourced form the Soda Canyon Ranch just south of the Stags Leap District. The vineyard is planted with Merlot developed by the French clonal selection program, where quality takes precedence over yield. The vines are tightly spaced to produce high quality, and the shoots are trained vertically for optimal sun and air exposure. Merlot thrives with the cool, foggy breezes from nearby San Pablo Bay.

The winery is a farmhouse design with white wood siding, porches and a bell tower. Inside the smartly decorated tasting room is a slick oval tasting counter and an attentive staff; a secondary tasting room is available for club members. Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc are also produced. Gardens, a lawn and a fountain add to the homey relaxed feel of the place.

Small winery feel

I'm not usually impressed by Merlot, but Twomey may have changed my mind about the subject. The tasting room was in a little cottage and had a very warm, inviting air to it all. The two ladies behind the counter were very friendly and explained the whole philosophy of Twomey (how it was related to Silver Oak) and how they were focusing on the highest quality possible for their one varietal, Merlot. We had a vertical tasting of three different Merlot vintages and each seemed better than the last. An added bonus was that we got to take the large, oversized wine glass home with us. This was one of the best bargains in the Valley ($5) in relation to the price of the wines (some were approaching the $100 mark). I'd definitely stop in here again and bring some friends who may be more Merlot-crazy than I am.
