Description

If you like Italian Chianti Classico, spiciness, and the fresh fruity flavors of strawberry, you should enjoy the wines made from the Sangiovese grape. At Vino Noceto, no fewer than 11 versions of this wine are available. They also produce Moscato Bianco, Frivolo, Barbera, Grappa and Zinfandel.

The tasting is done in their red barn on a simple barrel-and-plank tasting bar. Outside are two bocce ball courts and a fine picnic area with a number of interesting garden “adornments.” The old tractor planted within the flowers seems right at home, but the eight-foot-tall “Doggie Diner” head seems a bit miscast as their winery critter. The informal tasting room offers visitors a great opportunity to taste the same wine grape made in many different styles.

In 1987, the owners started their vineyard, and over the years added more vines. The vineyard has 24 acres of producing Sangiovese and one acre of Syrah. It also has several different clones of Sangiovese planted, all with their own unique attributes.

In the winery, the wines are made in the Chianti Classico-style by emphasizing the delicate and complex fruitiness of the grape. Each vineyard section is picked and aged separately, then blended into their flagship Sangiovese Normale. Additional blends and vineyard-block-designated wines are also produced.

I visited this particular vineyard with my father and our Labrador Howard, and we all had a fantastic time. I was more than impressed by the Sangiovese Normale, and we left that evening with a case to share with family and friends. The sweetness of the fruit mixed with the spicy kick creates a bottle of wine only to be shared amongst laughter and loved ones.
