Whalebone Vineyards Description
Whalebone vineyard derives its name from the many whale and marine fossils trapped in the vineyards’ broken shale and limestone. Calcareous treasures were left behind after the underwater canyons and basins retreated, and when the earth shifted and folded during the Miocene, some six million years ago.
In 1989, on this hillside reminiscent of a moonscape, the Simpson Family planted this distinctive property exclusively to Cabernet Sauvignon. Today the vines have lost their youthful exuberance and are gracefully transforming into a harmonious, low vigor vineyard, which needs little manipulation to produce low yields and high concentration required for quality wine.

Nice SupriseEagle12, Schaumburg A surprise stop for us, not on our original plan but a couple of our earlier stops recommended Whalebone. We loved it, the owners daughter was pouring the wines and answered all our questions. The cab stood out along with a couple of their Whalebone olive oils. The family pictures on the walls and the scenic views are worth the stop alone, but the wines are also very well made.

Great Picnicmargedoor5, Santa Cruz I went to this winery with an old sorority friend from college and fell in love with it. We had a picnic in some nice peace and silence and sipped on some wine in the tasting room. Our mutual favorite was their Cabernet Sauvignon. It really hit the spot for both of us. It is weird in college we used to like everything the same, and we were the same that day.
