Zaca Mesa Winery Description

Searching for the turnoff to Zaca Mesa Winery, look for the working windmill located at the entrance. Beyond it is the vineyard and large barn-like structure that houses Zaca Mesa Winery, just a part of this 750-acre ranch. Park in the back and take the short path under the oaks to the tasting room courtyard. Notice the giant chess set and picnic tables as you enter the large tasting center.

The stylish room has a “tasting island” and secondary tasting bar. Olives, olive oils, fancy sweets, crackers, cheese, cookbooks and wine country photographs are for sale. The winery is known for its estate-grown Rhone varieties, and has been credited with having planted the first Syrah grapes in Santa Barbara County.

The vineyard is approximately 30 miles from the coast and reaches 1500 feet in elevation. In 2002, one hundred acres of the original vineyard were replanted using new clones of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Viognier. Other changes include tightened vine spacing to reduce the pounds of grapes per vine, and the implementation of vertical trellises.

Wines produced include Chardonnay, Viognier, Roussanne, Syrah, Grenache, several Rhone blends and a dry Rose. There is a short trail from the back parking lot that leads up the hill to a picnic table under a grape trellis, providing commanding views of the valley.

attackdog100,
The property was just so beautiful and the tasting room was lovely. Big open area with a curved bar. They had a lot of wines for us to taste that day, I had done some research on their wines and asked if we could taste two that weren't on the list, Our server checked with the manager and she was able to open both bottles for us to taste. We each bought a bottle of the grenache blanc. We did this tour on our own. Well worth the little extra drive.

Harvest Weekend

On our last day, the second to the last stop is here at Zaca Mesa. Our server says she has transplanted from the high stress in L.A. to work here at ZM, and boy do I know why, this place is beautiful. hiking trails, oak trees, giant chess set. The winery is decorated for the fall with pumpkins and gourds everywhere. The wines are very well made and the syrahs lead the way. You take a look around the tasting room and there are thank you cards from past presidents of the United States, taste their syrahs and you'll know why. This is another winery that has exceptional syrahs and I purchase a bottle of the 2005 Santa Ynez Valley Syrah. If your out on the Foxen Trail don't miss it.

What a great spot. All their wines are excellent, especially the syrah. And they offer a selection of cheeses for sale. Bring a sandwich and enjoy the afternoon.

Doesn't Get Much Better Than This!

If you're looking for knowledgeable staff, a scenic retreat and some memorable wines, than look no further than Zaca Mesa winery. The moment that I walked into the tasting room, I felt right at home and ready to experience all that the winery had to offer. The tasting room attendant that assisted me was knowledgeable about all of the wines and provided me with an engaging history of the winery. Each of the wines that I tasted tantalized my palette and I urge you not to miss any of their memorable Syrahs...the best in the County if you ask me!

Great Chardonnay. My kids and I played chess and explored the trails. Worth a look.
