About This Winery

Just off the the Silverado Trail sits the sparkling wine cellars of Mumm Napa Valley. The famous French Champagne producer from Reims started testing California grapes in 1979 and decided on Napa for its U.S. operation. The first vintage was in 1986. The current facility was conceived in 1991 and completed in 1994.
The low rambling building hosts their Tasting Salon, a large sit down tasting room with dozens of tables both inside and out, and table service from a knowledgeable and attentive staff. The feeling is reminiscent of a high end restaurant though the focus is all on the wine including still Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Regular tours on the hour give an overview of the traditional French methods of sparkling winemaking production. The wines are created and blended on site from their own Carneros vineyards and from dozens of other nearby growers.
You begin your tour in a demonstration vineyard, and then enter the state-of-the-art winery. Enhancing the tour are short video loops of activities showing the action of harvest, bottling, riddling, disgorging, and labeling. For a fee there are private VIP tours available by appointment.
You are encouraged to take your glass full of bubbly to the winery building and take in the fine art photography gallery which exhibits the work of many renowned, as well as local, photographers. The extensive exhibit features more than 100 dramatic landscape photographs taken along the John Muir Trail, including nearly 30 Ansel Adams originals.
Tasting is by the glass or by the flight. Cheese and crackers are available. Many of the wines are only offered in the tasting room and include an assortment of distinctive refreshments including a sparkling Pinot Meunier, the special Carlos Santana DVX, and a wild berry non-alcoholic juice. There is a bocce ball court and space for large events.

Table service was a plus here. It feels like you are in a high end restaurant. The bubbly was excellent. We took a walk through the gallery and were thrilled to see so many Ansel Adams originals. 3.25/4 3.25/4 (0 reviews) 3/4 4/4 2/4 4/4 |
The grounds were beautiful but don't let them full you, the view from the tasting room does not belong to mumm... The atmosphere in the tasting room was very much like a casual dinning room, it was nice to sit down at a table rather than a bar but your "waiter" will be busy getting and delivering orders rather than spending one-on-one time with you. The prices were good and the sparkings very tasty. Would recommend for a first time Napa visitor. 3.25/4 3.25/4 (0 reviews) 3/4 3/4 4/4 3/4 |
Mumm makes great sparkling wines, in the same style as French Champagne, but lower prices. Tasting several in a flight will help you decide which grape and style suits your own taste. A party is not a good venue for deciding between sparkling wines, that's why you need to visit Mumm, and have them all laid out before you. Two people can order two different flights, so you can try several, but due to the amount of sparkling wine in each flight, it may be better to split 2 flights amongst 3-4 people. The tasting room is a comfortable dining room, where you sit at tables, instead of standing at a bar. Mumm is not the place to go if you want to spend a lot of time talking with the tasting room staff. At Mumm the wines are all poured for you at the beginning of the tasting atop coasters describing each. You are then left alone to appreciate the wines. While you sip, you can look out the full glass walls at the gardens. Be sure to buy a magnum for your New Year's Eve. Our favorite was Mumm Magnum Reserve. 3/4 3/4 (0 reviews) 2/4 4/4 3/4 3/4 |
This was our least favorite of the 23 wineries we stopped at on our trip. Loud with little atmosphere left us feeling like a high school cafeteria. the snack option was terrible. The sparkling wine we felt was just OK. We tasted 2 flights and bought nothing. The staff was nice and the Ansel Adams art gallery was impressive. I would not visit again 2.5/4 2.5/4 (0 reviews) 3/4 3/4 2/4 2/4 |
